Institutional Mechanisms as Critical Actors for Gender Equality: A Review from the OSCE Region
Institutional mechanisms for the advancement of women and gender equality have a unique potential for making women’s and men’s lives better and, more generally, making democracies stronger, more resilient and egalitarian. In these challenging times for democracy, institutional mechanisms play an important role in preventing the reversal of gender equality in practice.
The purpose of this guide is to help OSCE participating States and their governmental IMs for the advancement of women and of gender equality enhance their roles as critical actors in promoting gender equality and a more gender-just society. The guide presents a study of 42 countries from across the OSCE region, examines both gender mainstreaming and targeted efforts through the lens of the personal observations and experiences of people who work for IMs rather than via external assessment and provides concrete, evidence-based recommendations to help governments and IMs with their important and ongoing efforts to pursue the complex and highly challenging agenda for gender equality.
