Since 1999, Joint Declarations on freedom of expression have been an annual initiative to address contemporary global challenges to free expression and to provide recommendations to states and other stakeholders.

This year's Joint Declaration is on freedom of expression and "fake news", disinformation and propaganda and will be adopted by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, the Organization of American States Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information and the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media.
Dunja Mijatović will open the event together with David Kaye, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression; Edison Lanza, the Organization of American States Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and a number of other high-level guests.
