On 14 September 2016, representatives of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek, Aarhus Centre in Osh and state institutions including the Ministry of Emergency Situations and local authorities, will gather in Mayluu-Suu to participate in the official opening ceremony of the first local public information office (PIO) established to raise awareness among local residents on remediation works conducted by international donors and risks associated with proximity to Uranium Legacy Sites.
The opening of the PIO will help the Aarhus Centre in Osh extend its outreach to these environmentally exposed areas so as to disseminate and collect clear information on remediation works and prevent dangerous behaviours around hazardous sites. The establishment of PIOs in Mayluu-Suu, Shekaftar and Min-Kush is part of the multiyear ENVSEC “Uranium Legacy Remediation” intervention and is sponsored by the EU in the framework of the “Stakeholder engagement for Uranium Legacy Remediation in Central Asia”, jointly implemented by the OSCE, UNDP and UNEP.
