A new training centre for representatives of local crime-prevention centres (LCPCs) will open in Uzgen, Osh province, on 18 July 2013.
Located in the Uzgen District Administration building, the new, modernly equipped centre will allow representatives of 20 Uzgen LCPCs to meet regularly, co-ordinate their activities, share experiences, and attend training courses on community-policing practices. Electronic copies of national criminal legislation purchased for the centre will provide LCPC members with a better understanding of their duties, responsibilities and rights. In particular, access to information on legislation regarding domestic violence is expected to have a big impact on local women’s needs and rights.
The training-centre project was developed within the community-policing framework of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek and supported by the International Resources Group and USAID, which provided equipment and renovated the premises delegated by the Uzgen District Administration.
The OSCE launched its Community Policing Programme in Kyrgyzstan in 2003. It promotes close relations and co-operation between the police and the communities they serve to proactively address issues affecting public safety and contributing to crime.
