SKOPJE, 7 March 2007 - The National Referral Mechanism which helps victims of human trafficking and other achievements in the field were the topic of a presentation for Members of Parliament in Skopje today.

The presentation was based on research and studies published by the Ministry of Labour and Social policy with support from the OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje.

"Human trafficking is a serious crime that violates human dignity," said Ambassador Natalya Drozd, the Deputy Head of the OSCE Mission.

"The authorities have done a lot to bring to justice those responsible for this crime and have taken on board the comprehensive approach promoted by the OSCE. It is important to further strengthen measures to prevent human trafficking while at the same time maintaining a humanitarian approach in rendering assistance to victims."

Ljupco Meshkov, Minister of Labour and Social policy, added that the Ministry actively participates in the work of the National Commission, mostly in the field of prevention activities, and continues to help shelter and protect victims of trafficking, including minors.

The discussion was organized by State authorities and civil society, including the National Referral Mechanism Co-ordination Office, the National Commission to Combat Trafficking in Human Beings and Illegal Migration, the Parliamentary Commission for Equal Opportunities and the Club of Parliamentary Women.
