Assistance with small arms

The OSCE Document on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) outlines areas in which assistance could be provided to participating States:

  • Responding to requests for assistance in securing and managing stockpiles of small arms;
  • Assisting with, and possible monitoring of, the reduction and disposal of small arms;
  • Encouraging and, as necessary, providing advice or mutual assistance in implementing and reinforcing border controls to reduce illicit trafficking in small arms;
  • Assisting with small arms collection and control programmes;
  • As appropriate, expanding the mandate of an OSCE field mission or presence to cover small arms issues;
  • Consulting and co-ordinating, in line with the OSCE Platform for Co-operative Security, with other international organizations and institutions.
    (OSCE Document on SALW, Section IV and V)

Decision No.15/02 on Expert Advice on Implementation of Section V of the OSCE Document on SALW specifies steps the FSC will take after receiving a request for assistance from a participating State.

OSCE participating States interested in receiving assistance on SALW in the areas mentioned above are encouraged to address a request through their delegation to the OSCE Permanent Council. For assistance, please contact the OSCE FSC Support Unit, + 43-1 514 36 0.
