OSCE Representative marks 5th anniversary of journalist’s murder in Azerbaijan; reiterates call to end impunity
VIENNA, 23 November 2016 – On the 5th anniversary of the death of Azerbaijani writer and newspaper columnist Rafiq Tagi, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović reitirated her call to Azerbaijan and all other OSCE participating States to ensure journalists’ safety and end impunity for crimes against them.
“On the anniversary of the murder of Rafiq Tagi, I again call on the responsible institutions of Azerbaijan to find and prosecute his killer and mastermind behind it. I also reitirate my call to all other OSCE participating States to ensure the journalists’ safety and fully investigate all attacks on media representatives for performing their professional duties,” Mijatović said.
On 19 November 2011 a single attacker stabbed Tagi repeatedly. The journalist died four days later in a Baku hospital. His attacker has not been found and reportedly an investigation into the matter has been ended.
