После напряженных переговоров и содействия в организации локального перемирия между противостоящими сторонами, 26 марта команда Специальной мониторинговой миссии ОБСЕ (СММ) в Украине во главе с заместителем Главы миссии Александром Хугом, попала в Широкино для того, чтобы проверить соблюдение режима прекращения огня и оценить гуманитарную ситуацию. Во время визита наблюдатели проводили пешее патрулирование, а также ездили на бронированных автомобилях.
