Після напружених переговорів і сприяння в організації локального перемир’я між конфронтуючими сторонами, 26 березня команда Спеціальної моніторингової місії ОБСЄ (СММ) в Україні на чолі з заступником Голови місії, Александром Хугом, потрапила в Широкине для того, щоб перевірити дотримання режиму припинення вогню і оцінити гуманітарну ситуацію. Під час візиту спостерігачі здійснювали піше патрулювання, а також їздили на броньованих автомобілях.
