The third and final workshop organized by the OSCE Mission to Skopje’s Police Development Department on the issue of children on the street will be held in Stip on 3 November 2011. The two previous workshops were held in October in Skopje and Ohrid.
The workshops aim to increase the capacities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for better co-operation and co-ordination with other relevant institutions in order to foster a multi-agency and thereby more efficient response to safety issues concerning the Roma population, with a focus on children on the street. They follow the Mission’s activities of 2010 aimed at promoting the social inclusion of the Roma community and at raising police awareness of Roma-specific safety issues.
Participants in the workshops include police officers working with children on the street, representatives of Centres for Social Care, local NGOs and Roma information centres, as well as representatives of local self-government units and the National Co-ordinative Body responsible for the implementation of the Roma Strategy.
At the workshops, the participants are familiarized with relevant legislation, and have an opportunity to participate in interactive sessions to identify multi-sector initiatives for the prevention and protection of children on the street, as well as measures for improving co-operation among the relevant institutions.
The final product of the workshops will be a comprehensive report of proposals and recommendations for multi-disciplinary initiatives aimed at resolving the problem of children on the street.
