Professional actors from Kurgan-Tube’s Regional Theatre of Musical Comedy named after Ato Mukhammedjanov performing a scene on a school stage dedicated to 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. In Khatlon region 8 theatre performances were conducted in Rumi, Khuroson and Kumsangir districts. In Tajikistan the roots of domestic violence, particularly against women is caused by several factors. One of the factors is women’s poor awareness of their rights and inaccessibility to justice. Domestic violence is often perpetrated by the mother-in-law from generation to generation, Khuroson District, Ayni Jamoat of Kurgan-Tube, December 2014.

OSCE Office in Tajikistan has previously been pleased with the performances and the small-scale cooperation with theater groups and is particularly pleased with the attention that the theater groups have received from young persons, Khuroson District, Ayni Jamoat of Kurgan-Tube, December 2014.

Given the low literacy levels in some of the rural areas, theatrical performances are a more relevant means of communication and raising awareness, than for example the distribution of written material, Khuroson District, Ayni Jamoat of Kurgan-Tube, December 2014.
