Women have historically participated little in decision-making in Moldova. The OSCE Mission to Moldova aims to contribute to increasing the number of women in local politics through capacity-building training seminars and advocacy and awareness-raising in the regions.
Photo
According to current statistics, only two out of 32 rayon (district) presidents are women. The number of female mayors or deputy mayors of municipalities, towns and villages after the 2007 elections was 163 out of 898, or 18.2%. In 2008 the number decreased to 157, or 17.5%.

Participants share experience of addressing gender issues, overcoming stereotypes and discrimination, and increasing women's participation in social and political life, and in the legislative process.
Photo
Seminar participants discussed ways to encourage the media to make women’s voices heard in their election coverage.
Photo
The seminars focus on topics such as how to run a campaign, how to identify the needs and interests of the electorate and how to communicate with potential voters more effectively.

A special session of the seminar on the composition of the Central Election Commission, District Election Councils and Precinct Election Bureaus gave participants a deeper understanding of the Moldovan election administration system.
