Organized by Karaganda State University, in co-operation with the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities under its Central Asia Education Programme, the Olympiad attracted 102 students from 25 universities in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

The Max van der Stoel Award 2016 was presented to the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR), a Cyprus-based non-governmental organization, for its work on history teaching as a tool for reconciliation in Cyprus, in a ceremony organized by the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities on 24 October 2016, in The Hague.
