Media freedom is crucial for the health of democratic societies. It allows for the free exchange of information, encourages transparency, and holds those in power accountable. However, the safety of journalists, which is fundamental to media freedom, is increasingly under threat. Journalists across the globe face numerous dangers, including physical assaults, intimidation, smear campaigns, legal harassment, and online attacks. These threats not only jeopardize the lives and well-being of journalists but also impede their ability to report freely and fairly.
The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media is hosting a regional event in Almaty, Kazakhstan, dedicated to the safety of journalists. This significant event, scheduled for 26-27 June 2024, will serve as a critical platform for discussing the pressing issues facing journalists today and sharing practical solutions to improve their safety and working conditions.
The event will be packed with insightful sessions, starting with opening remarks from prominent figures, including Teresa Ribeiro, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, and high-level officials from Kazakhstan.
It will provide a unique opportunity to gather a diverse group of stakeholders, including journalists, media professionals, legal experts, and researchers from Central Asia and beyond. By bringing together these key players, the OSCE aims to foster collaboration and develop comprehensive strategies that ensure the protection of media professionals. This, in turn, upholds the freedom of the press and strengthens the democratic fabric of our societies.
