This online event is organized to mark the launch of the joint ODIHR and UNESCO four-volume publication Addressing anti-Semitism in Schools: Training Curricula. The webinar will serve to present the publication’s underlying principles, approach, methodology and structure. It will also include a panel discussion, featuring experts and policy makers, on contemporary manifestations of anti-Semitism and effective ways to address the phenomenon of anti-Semitism in and through education.
Why it is important
Anti-Semitic manifestations and incidents - from tacit, covert and coded forms to acts of discrimination, hate and violence - are ongoing and pose serious threats to the security of not only individuals but also of whole societies, including in the school environment.
Educational systems are an essential element in any comprehensive effort to address anti-Semitism and other forms of intolerance and discrimination. Schools and teachers, in particular, can play a significant role in raising young people’s awareness of the nature of anti-Semitism and its effects and in building their resilience to prejudice and the toxic ideologies that drive discrimination and hatred.
The publication
In this context, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and UNESCO have collaborated on a four-volume publication entitled Addressing Anti-Semitism in Schools: Training Curricula. It is closely based on UNESCO’s and ODIHR’s guidelines for policymakers on Addressing anti-Semitism through Education, published in 2018.
The new publication was developed with the support of the University College London Centre for Holocaust Education as part of ODIHR’s Turning Words into Action to Address anti-Semitism project and within the framework of UNESCO’s programme on Global Citizenship Education.
Intended for trainers, the curricula are designed to be comprehensive, practical and adaptable. They suggest concrete ways to address anti-Semitism and counter prejudice in and through education within a human rights framework. They are also meant to foster global citizenship education and promote gender equality.
