Organized by
ODIHR is organizing a webinar to discuss the functional independence of prosecutors in Central and Eastern Europe. The webinar will also discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on prosecutors.
The event will be attended by prosecutors from Eastern and Central Europe as well as international experts and civil society organizations. It will be an opportunity for participants to share good practices and discuss obstacles to achieving the functional independence of prosecutors. It will also provide a venue for networking and a platform to launch further discussions on the topic.
Functional independence
The functional independence of prosecutors is an important safeguard for the rule of law and is complementary to the independence of judges. ODIHR has conducted a related study in Eastern Europe. It has revealed that prosecutorial independence is often protected in law, but that in practice there is still much to be done.
