Training for members of local detention-monitoring commissions in northern Moldova

This training course will provide members of local detention-monitoring commissions and representatives of local authorities with legal knowledge about their responsibilities, reporting skills and practical skills for monitoring different places of detention, including police commissariats, penitentiaries and psychiatric hospitals.
On 19 October 2012, training participants and experts will visit the Soroca penitentiary, police commissariat and a detention facility for convicts sufferering from various types of mental illness in the village of Bădiceni.
The training course is part of a year-long project to support the development of local monitoring commissions into active and effective mechanisms for monitoring human rights and preventing torture at the local level.
An additional training session will be conducted in the central region of Moldova in November 2012.
