This roundtable meeting will discuss intermediate results of an OSCE project on supporting Water User Associations (WUAs) in the southern Kyrgyzstan achieved in 2012. Some 80 project stakeholders including WUAs and local government representatives from Osh, Jalal-Abad and Batken provinces will share best practices and lessons learned.
As part of this project the OSCE Centre in Bishkek and 48 trained mentors from 12 WUAs provided mentoring and consultations for 36 WUAs-mentees from three southern provinces on water use legislation, administrative management and efficient application of irrigation methods, prevention of salinization, transparency and modern methods of payments for water use, water saving technologies in irrigation, conflict management and water measurement methods. In addition, the Centre in Bishkek provided technical assistance to WUAs, such as sluice gates and construction materials, as well as mini-grants for the implementation of joint activities of WUAs and local self-government bodies.
In 2013 the OSCE Centre in Bishkek plans to continue this project, with a possible expansion to areas in the north of Kyrgyzstan.
