The OSCE Programme Office in Astana, the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Kazakhstan’s Institute for Strategic Studies under the President are jointly organizing an international conference “Accomplishments and Challenges for the OSCE on the Anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act (1975) and Astana Summit (2010).”
The event aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion among OSCE participating States on the Organization’s place in the modern security architecture and potential areas where its role could be strengthened to keep up with the security challenges of the 21st century. During the conference the special emphasis will be placed on the ongoing discussions of the OSCE prospects for strengthening the Eurasian security community, addressing transnational challenges and threats, most notably stemming from in and around Afghanistan and promoting rule of law and civil society development as a prerequisite for sustainable economic growth.
More than 100 participants are expected to attend, including high-level officials from Kazakhstan, representatives of the OSCE, international and civil society organizations, national institutes of strategic studies, think-tanks and academia, as well as international experts from France, Georgia, Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Switzerland, Tajikistan, the United States and Uzbekistan. Some 20 permanent representatives to the OSCE from Vienna will also attend the conference in the framework of their visit to Kazakhstan.
