The Project Co-ordinator assists in organizing OSCE events and activities in the area and furthers information exchange between OSCE bodies and participating States in Central Asia.
The original focus of the OSCE Liaison Office in Central Asia, established in Tashkent in 1995, was to link more closely to the OSCE the five Central Asian countries: Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. In 1998, the OSCE also established Centres in Almaty, Ashgabat and Bishkek. A Centre in Dushanbe had been deployed already in 1993. As a result of this expanded presence in the region, the focus of the Liaison Office's activities shifted to Uzbekistan.
The OSCE Permanent Council formalized this state of facts in its decision of 14 December 2000, that renamed the OSCE Liaison Office in Central Asia to OSCE Centre in Tashkent.
On 1 July 2006, the OSCE Permanent Council established the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan as a new form of co-operation between the OSCE and the Republic of Uzbekistan, with a view to further develop and consolidate project activities of the OSCE in Uzbekistan.
Further information on mandates, staffing levels and budgets can be found in the annual Survey of OSCE Field Operations.
