OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan
Environment
In the field of environmental protection, the main priority of the Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan (PCUz) is to enhance public participation. The Project Co-ordinator strives to address good governance issues, to implement the OSCE Strategy Document for the Economic and Environmental Dimension, and to promote and help implement relevant initiatives of the Uzbek Government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
The PCUz helps promote the work of the Office of the Co-ordinator of OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities within the framework of the joint regional OSCE-UNDP-UNEP-NATO Environmental Security Initiative (ENVSEC).
Projects 2008
Environmental education
In co-operation with the World Bank, the Project Co-ordinator supports the NGO EKOMAKTAB, which works with school children with disabilities. The project aims at combining personal and professional development with ecological education and awareness-rising of nature protection.
The ECOFORUM and environmental bulletin
In the framework of the OSCE agenda on preventing environmental conflicts, and as a follow-up to the ENVSEC, the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan is focusing on highlighting existing and potential environmental risks in Uzbekistan, and facilitating the exchange of opinions on how to avoid environmentally hazardous activities and environmentally related conflicts.
As part of this programme, the PCUz in co-operation with the National Associations of NGOs of Uzbekistan and the Environmental NGO "ARMON" is supporting the preparation and publication of the bulletin "Environmental Security and Civil Initiative".
Special attention is paid to promoting public participation in environmental decision-making through the support of ECOFORUM, including national discussion on the constraints in adopting the Aarhus Convention and regional discussion on joint management and use of the transboundary water and energy resources of Central Asia.
Domestic waste is one of the more obvious environmental problems many societies face. (OSCE)
