Good governance

Support to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorists

The OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan provides support to the Prosecutor-General’s Office, the Central Bank, and a number of commercial banks in improving practices involved in discovering and investigating criminal operations involving money laundering and terrorism financing and also prosecuting individuals accused of committing such crimes. This support has included the organization training courses, conducting risk assessments, and the exchange of advanced international practices with the purpose of compliance with international standards.

Initiatives against corruption

Uzbekistan is a state party to the United Nations Convention against Corruption, and it also works with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s network with the purpose or decreasing the level of corruption in the country. The OSCE supports the activities of the Prosecutor-General’s Office and the Justice Ministry in developing a national action plan and in increasing the awareness of corruption cases among key state authorities.

Judgements of economic courts

The private sector in Uzbekistan is developing and is likely to become an important factor in the overall economic growth in the country. In order to provide more information about the rights and obligations of private business, the OSCE provides support to the Higher Commercial Court in selecting, drafting commentaries to, and publishing the judgments of regional commercial courts. Also, training sessions are held to ensure that representatives of private businesses and state institutions are better informed with respect to relevant legislation.

In addition, employees of arbitration courts have taken part in training courses to improve their professional skills and to increase their opportunities to co-operate with the international arbitration community.

Improvement of legislation

The OSCE Project Co-ordinator, jointly with other OSCE institutions, also co-operates with the Central Election Commission. Assistance has been provided to improve legislation with the purpose of ensuring the transparency of the election process, and also to improve laws related to the mass media through public discussions.
