Preparing future teachers for their work in multicultural environments
The OSCE Mission to Skopje will organize a four-day seminar on the social aspects of the teaching profession from 9 to 12 October 2014 in Ohrid.
Over 60 future teachers from all five teacher training institutions in the country will participate in the seminar, together with primary school teachers, representatives from non-governmental organizations, the Ministry of Education and Science and the Universities of Skopje, Tetovo, Štip and Bitola.
As part of the project “Strengthening the pre-service teacher training system in multi-ethnic societies”, the seminar will promote a better inter-ethnic understanding between the future teachers and the development of practical skills related to teaching in a multicultural context.
Covering forms of non-violent communication, conflict management, recognizing signs of domestic violence and human trafficking, and working with children from marginalized groups, the seminar will provide future teachers with necessary knowledge to deal with challenges of the teaching profession.
The students will also undertake a three-month internship with NGOs working with children of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, where they can put the newly acquired knowledge into practice.
The Federal Republic of Germany has been funding the project since 2009.
