Ahead of the coming parliamentary and local elections in Serbia, an OSCE-organized seminar on professional media coverage of the elections process was held at the OSCE Training Facility in Novi Pazar from 27 February to 1 March 2012. Participants included TV reporters, camera-operators and picture editors from six leading regional and local TV stations from south-western Serbia. The course was lead by trainers from the UK, who are former staff from BBC News.
The workshop explored methods of making coverage of political campaigning interesting, visual and relevant to the viewers, and explaining the issues so that citizens can make informed choices at the ballot box. Each journalist researched and produced a topical feature about an election issue. These reports were shared so that each participating media outlet could transmit a series of pre-election features immediately after the workshop.
