BELGRADE, 18 February 2002 - The Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE, Jaime Gama, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, will pay a visit to Belgrade and Podgorica on 19 and 20 February.
This is the first visit to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia since Minister Gama took over the Chairmanship of the OSCE. During his visit, he will have meetings with the highest officials on the Federal, Serbian and Montenegrin levels, as well as other relevant political and non-governmental representatives.
The Portuguese Chairman of the OSCE will use this opportunity to discuss with his interlocutors the further involvement of the OSCE in the ongoing process of reforms aimed at the building of democratic institutions in Serbian and Montenegro. More specifically, the OSCE, which set up a Mission in the FRY in January 2001, has been working on reforms in the field of the judiciary, police and media. The Mission has also been actively engaged in the stabilization of the situation in southern Serbia, establishing a multi-ethnic police force, and is presently preparing for the holding of early municipal elections in close co-operation with the Governmental Co-ordinating Body.
According to the Head of the OSCE Mission to the FRY, Ambassador Stefano Sannino, "the visit of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office comes at a moment when the Mission is striking a balance of a year of activities, following an approach that centres around co-operation and co-ordination with the country's authorities and its official institutions".
Following the meeting of Minister Gama with the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs, Goran Svilanovic, on Tuesday morning, 19 February, there will be a joint press briefing from 9.30 - 9.45 at the Foreign Ministry. Please contact Tanja Olujic at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for accreditation (tel. +381-11 3618 032).
In the afternoon, the OSCE Chairman-in-Office will depart for Podgorica for meetings with senior republic and political party representatives. Before returning to Belgrade, the OSCE Chairman-in-Office will give a press briefing on Tuesday, 19 February, at 20.00, in Villa Gorica in Podgorica.
On Wednesday morning, 20 February, the Chairman-in-Office will have a concluding press conference from 9.15 - 9.45 at the OSCE Mission's premises on Bulevar Mira 26, Belgrade.
