OSCE Mission, Serbian State Attorney's Office organize first regional meeting of State Attorneys in Belgrade
BELGRADE, 25 November 2016 – The role of State Attorneys in the rule of law and the provision of legal services were discussed at the first regional meeting of State Attorneys which concluded today in Belgrade.
Discussions focused on the mechanisms for introducing regular practice exchanges and ways to address legal issues affecting the work of the offices in the region. The participants reached consensus to continue their co-operation in the future through regular meetings, thematic discussions, and the exchange of good practices.
The meeting, organized by the OSCE Mission to Serbia in partnership with the State Attorney’s Office of Serbia, brought together some 35 high-level judicial officials of the State Attorney Offices of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Slovenia.
The State Attorney’s Offices have wide competences focusing on representing state interests in numerous court proceedings on the national and international level, for instance, at the European Court for Human Rights.
“The work of State Attorney’s offices is of utmost importance for efficiency of the justice system, legal certainty, access to justice, and public trust in the judiciary,” said Ambassador Andrea Orizio, Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia.
“The OSCE Mission to Serbia acknowledged the crucial role of the State Attorney by starting to co-operate with this institution in 2016, and is developing future programming for the benefit not only of the office itself, but most importantly the citizens of Serbia,” said Orizio.
This first meeting of representatives of State Attorney Offices from the region, aimed at promoting the State Attorney Offices and highlights the important role this institution has in the rule of law and the provision of legal services.
