OSCE Mediterranean Partners discuss linkages between environment and security
Mapping of areas in the Southern Mediterranean Region where environmental issues could potentially turn into security challenges was the focus of an expert workshop in Vienna on 11 December 2014, organized by the Office of the Co-ordinator of OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities.
The workshop, attended by experts and representatives of the OSCE Mediterranean Partners for Co-operation and OSCE participating States, identified environmental issues that could impact on security as well as the environmental implications of security policies. Participants also shared good practices in managing transboundary water resources.
“Today’s workshop underscores our dedication to peace in the Mediterranean region through facilitating dialogue on environment and security issues,” said OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier at the opening of the workshop.
This workshop is a follow-up to one held in Amman, Jordan in June 2012. Both workshops are part of the so-called “Valencia follow-up process” and include a special mapping exercise to help participants identify geographic areas of concern through an interactive and participatory process.
The workshop is organized with the support of the Government of Monaco.
