This workshop for judges, prosecutors and defence counsel will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss with, and learn from experienced practitioners on how to effectively adjudicate war crimes cases in Serbia.
The workshop will bring together 23 participants with the aim of furthering their understanding of international humanitarian and criminal law, the elements of war crimes and modes of liability, as well as procedural questions related to the application of the new Serbian Criminal Procedure Code. The sessions will be led by Judge Siniša Važić from the Belgrade Court of Appeal, Judge Wolfgang Schomburg, a former international tribunal judge responsible for adjudicating war crimes cases, and defence counsel Novak Lukić, specialized in the litigation of complex war crimes cases before international courts.
This meeting is the seventh activity organized this year as part of the second phase of the OSCE/ODIHR War Crimes Justice Project, which aims to build the capacity and reinforce the professional ties of justice actors handling war crimes cases in the region.
