Training course and roundtable on the Parliament's role in EU integration
- Date:
- 26 February 2008–29 February 2008
- Location:
- Podgorica
- Description:
- How to ensure an effective and efficient role for the Parliament in the process of EU integration was the topic of two joint events co-organized by the OSCE Mission to Montenegro and the Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Affairs and EU Integration.
In the first event, a regional training on EU Integration, parliamentary staff of EU integration committees from across the Balkan region participated in a course on the challenges of EU accession. The participants from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and the UN administration in Kosovo were joined by experts and peers from Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
The second event, a roundtable on the Parliament's role in EU integration, brought together members of the Montenegrin Committee for International Affairs and EU Integration, selected staff members of other parliamentary committees, and staff from the Government's Office for EU Integration.
The participants learned about the experiences of parliamentarians and experts from countries including Croatia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, which have faced or are facing similar challenges in their EU accession process.
They were also able to strengthen relations with regional peers in the first event and reinforce links between the Government and the Parliament of Montenegro in the second.
The Mission's long-term parliamentary support programme includes an assistance team, which is located within the Parliament building so that it may better forge professional working relationships with its staff members and MPs, as well as get a first-hand feeling for the needs of the institution.
"There are different schools of thought about the exact and proper role of the Parliament in EU integration. This will be something that you will determine. But regardless, the Parliament's role must be meaningful."Head of the Mission to Montenegro, Ambassador Paraschiva Badescu
