The Economics and Environment Section promotes reconciliation and regional co-operation and supports involvement of environmental non-governmental organisation in the policy design of Montenegro. It works on the promotion of national sustainable development programme and monitors overall developments in the area of economy and environment.
Together with national and international stakeholders, the Mission is working on promoting reconciliation and co-operation among countries of the region in different fields, such as preventing corruption in financial institutions, combating money laundering, suppressing financing of terrorism and prevention of trafficking and sexual exploitation of minors. An important objective of this promotion is to introduce the principles of key international instruments on fighting these phenomena to the Montenegrin decision-makers.
The Mission has, together with the OSCE Presence in Albania and financial assistance from the German organization GTZ, launched a project on public-private cooperation in the prevention of trafficking and sexual exploitation of minors in travel and tourism in Montenegro and Albania, by having relevant institutions and industries in these countries adopt and implement the Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism.
The Mission strives to enhance implementation of the local sustainable development strategies that are seen as an effective way for enabling economic and environment development, for prudent use of natural resources and engagement of all stakeholders. The Mission is also playing an active role in drafting the national sustainable development strategy.
It further supports involvement of environmental non-governmental organizations in the policy design of Montenegro through establishment of a resource centre. The aim of this project is to provide exchange of information between environmental NGOs in regard to development and implementation of new and current environmental policies and legislation. The centre serves also as a library of EU and domestic related legislation.
The Mission works on establishing of public - private partnership and providing a larger participation of the private businesses in the decision making process, as in all free market economies. Through implementation of educational projects for elementary schools involving environmental education, such as recycling, rational usage and consumption of energy, it works on raising awareness among young people on the importance of environmental protection and their role in its protection.
