TBILISI, 23 July 2008. - The first phase of a media-development project by the OSCE Mission to Georgia ended today with the completion of a six-day documentary training course for 12 Ossetian journalists in Tskhinvali.

Some 80 people, including journalists, non-governmental organization representatives in Tskhinvali, and residents from the villages of Avnevi, Artsevi and Dzari took part in courses, ranging from basic photography to professional photojournalism and documentary-making.

"The response has been very encouraging. Through training in photojournalism and documentary-making, journalists, NGOs and village residents have begun to explore confidence-building and the positive effects of economic rehabilitation," said Martha Freeman, Mission Spokesperson.

"The project has been a small but effective step in helping journalists and residents look at their environment from a different perspective."

The project, called Signs of Hope: confidence-building and economic rehabilitation, envisages continuing with an exhibition, film work and a study visit.

Grzegorz Michalski, Head of the OSCE Mission's Tskhinvali Field Office, added:

"The programme is part of our continued efforts to build confidence between communities in the region, and pave the way for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. We are pleased that the programme was well received in all areas, including both Georgian and Ossetian villages."
