The meeting in La Valletta was the third Meeting of Experts on the peaceful settlement of disputes (PSD). In reflected on what the CSCE could add to to peaceful settlement, given its long-standing experience with co-operative and regional approaches to security.
The meetings on PSD led to the adoption of the Convention on PSD in Stockholm (1992), and to the creation of the Court of Conciliation and Arbitration (1995).
The first Meeting of Experts on the peaceful settlement of disputes took place in Montreux, Switzerland, in the winter of 1978, according to the provisions of the the Helsinki Final act and of the Belgrade Follow-up Meeting. The second meeting took place in Athens in 1984.
The fourth and last meeting in this series took place in Geneva in 1992 and prepared the draft declaration for the Stockholm Ministerial Council and the Convention on the Court for Conciliation and Arbitration.

The OSCE Court of Conciliation and Arbitration, located in Geneva, was set up at the recommendation of the CSCE meetings of experts for the peaceful settlement of disputes. (OSCE)
