OSCE Mission to Serbia concerned over street names
BELGRADE, 5 April 2007 - The OSCE Mission to Serbia voiced concern today over the recent decision by the Novi Sad city assembly to name two streets after individuals who were allegedly involved in atrocities during the wars from the 1990s.
"Such a naming contradicts the important process of bringing justice to all victims of war crimes, the need for regional reconciliation and co-operation, and for resolving the regional refugee problems," said Acting Head of Mission Anthony Pahigian.
The OSCE Mission to Serbia also noted the recent progress made by the relevant prosecutorial and judicial bodies in the former Yugoslav States in their co-operation to address the issue of war crimes through joint investigations or exchange of data.
"We strongly support all regional processes of reconciliation and improved regional co-operation, as a basis for building a common European future," Pahigian added. "In this context, we encourage all democratically oriented forces and citizens of Serbia to remain committed to this path."
