Security Sector Governance and Reform (SSG/R) is high on the international agenda and is increasingly gaining momentum and relevance for the OSCE.
The purpose of the conference is to discuss strategies for comprehensive support to SSG/R processes with an OSCE-wide perspective. Such a comprehensive approach includes, among other things, national ownership and regional approaches. Ensuring national ownership is an essential requirement for the sustainability of internationally supported reform processes. Examining SSG/R support through a regional lens is important to identify regional approaches to translational challenges. Thus, both topics are of great relevance in the OSCE area, in particular South East Europe.
Furthermore, the conference will provide an overview about the current efforts within the OSCE to develop more coherent and co-ordinated approaches to SSG/R, as well as an introduction to the ongoing global debates on SSG/R from different perspectives.
Serbia is dedicated to further pursue discussions on SSG/R during its Chairmanship. As a founding member of the Group of Friends of SSG/R, it is committed to promote SSG/R within the OSCE to increase coherence, effectiveness and efficiency.
Participants will include senior officials from Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defense and Interior, OSCE delegations, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, and staff of the OSCE executive structures, in particular the internal SSG/R focal points as well as representatives from the security sector, national parliaments, the academia and civil society.
