Prevention of illicit drug trade on Internet to be discussed at OSCE conference in Vienna tomorrow

VIENNA, 24 July 2013 – Representatives of OSCE participating States, international organizations, civil society and the private sector will meet tomorrow in Vienna for a two-day conference on prevention of illicit drug trade on the Internet.

The meeting is organized jointly by the Ukrainian 2013 OSCE Chairmanship and the Transnational Threats Department of the OSCE Secretariat  will present an opportunity to build stronger international and regional co-operation to combat the illicit drugs trade on the Internet.

Its participants, including representatives of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, as well as International Narcotics Control Board will share information, best practices, and lessons learned, in order to improve the role of the OSCE participating States in the strengthening of mechanisms to prevent illicit drug supply with the use of modern technologies and communication systems, including by facilitating co-operation among law enforcement representatives. They will also exchange information on the new trends in illicit drugs supply and new methods of forensic computer investigations.

Ambassador Ihor Prokopchuk, the Chairperson of the OSCE Permanent Council and the OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier will make opening remarks.

Media representatives are invited to attend the opening session of the event on Thursday, 25 July 2013, from 15:00 to 15:30 at the Ratsaal of the Hofburg Congress Centre.
