Kyrgyzstan will continue pursuing democratic development, says OSCE Secretary General

BISHKEK, 26 April 2008 - OSCE Secretary General Marc Perrin de Brichambaut met Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiev and other high-level officials today to discuss the country's reform progress and ways to enhance co-operation with the Organization.

"Kyrgyz officials reiterated their strong support for OSCE activities in the country, in such areas as police and penitentiary reform; political institutions development; promotion of gender equality; the fight against trafficking in human beings, corruption and money laundering; anti-terrorism, border control and others. The OSCE is ready to continue enhancing its work in response to the country's needs," said the Secretary General during a one-day visit to the country.

The potential for OSCE assistance with customs and Kyrgyztan's support to the Organization for engaging with Afghanistan were also discussed.

During the visit the Secretary General also met Parliament Speaker Adahan Madumarov, Foreign Minister Ednan Karabaev and Interior Minister Moldomusa Kongantiev, and held discussions with representatives of non-governmental organizations and political parties.

"Kyrgyzstan has been an example of democratic transition in the region. I am confident that the country will maintain its leading position in pursuing international standards of democratic development, respect for fundamental human, civil and political rights, especially freedom of assembly, speech and media, in accordance with international and OSCE commitments," said the Secretary General.
