On the occasion of the 2012 World Environment Day on 5 June, staff of the OSCE Centre in Astana planted shrubs in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The theme of the 2012 World Environmental Day is “Green economy: does it include you?” The event was organized by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia to raise awareness of environmental risks and ecological scarcities.

The OSCE staff joined some 40 representatives of international organizations, the business community, and civil society involved in environmental co-operation throughout Central Asia. The greening initiative was followed by an advocacy meeting on topical issues of environmental protection and governance.

UN World Environment Day has been celebrated every 5 June since 1972 to publicize the importance of taking positive action to protect the environment.
