ALMATY, 6 August 2001 (OSCE) - For the second time, the OSCE Centre in Almaty organizes on 15 August a round table meeting on ecology issues in Kazakhstan. The round table, which will take place in the framework of the implementation of principles deriving from the Aarhus Convention in Kazakhstan, will bring together representatives of the Kazakh Government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to discuss ecological legislation in the country.
The ultimate goal of the round table meetings is to prepare an ecological code and/or doctrine by a special working group, of which the composition and its first tasks will be decided during the coming meeting.
In addition to the Committee on Ecology of the Majilis of the Kazakh Parliament, the Ministry of Natural Resources and local NGOs, various international organizations will be present at the round table to observe the meeting as well as the work of the future working group that is to discuss the ecological legislation for the country.
The first round table meeting, which was also organized by the OSCE Centre in Almaty, was held on 21 April, following the ratification by the Republic of Kazakhstan of the Aarhus Convention, which paved the way for improved co-operation between the Government and local NGOs.
